Last Friday we held a wonderful event in our school organised by Joshua Connon and his team of supporters : his brother Diarmuid and friends in Transition year. Joshua is a wheelchair user and a member of Offaly Rowing Club in Tullamore. He currently uses a boat borrowed from ‘Commercial RC’ in Dublin but ir aiming to raise €6000 to buy an adaptive single scull rowing boat for the Tullamore club. These boats are made to an extremely high standard by Wintech Racing and can outlast even the most dedicated rowers, some boats can have a lifespan of 25-30 years!
Last Friday we welcomed primary students from Ferbane and High Street and secondary school students from Birr and Mountrath Community Schools to play against our students in wheelchair basketball. There was many different games organised for the teams and our own fifth years were the winning second level team to win on the day.
Wristbands were on sale for students to buy which allowed them to view some of the matches and take part. In the afternoon we had a teachers v’s students game. In a closely competitive match and Joshua obviously outclassing all other players, the teachers still mananged to win the day much to the disappoinment of the students. Sorry about that students!! A big thanks to Orla Dempsey and friends in the Irish Wheelchair Association for assisting on the day.
On May 23rd the next event takes place with the Wheelchair Grand Canal challenge and hoping members of the community will take sponsorship cards and support this great cause. Please check out their website www.floatourboat.ie to learn more about this great Fundraising drive.
