FIRST YEAR PARENTS NIGHT – thanks to all who made this night a most informative evening for our 1st years and their parents guardians. Our First Years are now sampling the next set of modules and are settling in well into school life in Gallen CS.
6TH YEAR BIOLOGY TRIPS – thanks to Ms Brennan , Mrs Killian and Ms Buckley who accompanied their students on ecology trips around Birr [ Orange Hill Wood] and the local vicinity around Ferbane respectively.These practical studies trips are an invaluable component of the Biology Course and will stand the students in good stead in June.
TY ENTERPRISE – preparations for the TY Enterprise continue with our students busy at work in preparing their projects.TY students have been busy surveying students on aspects of their upcoming projects and they are wished well in their endeavours.
STUDY SKILLS – Thanks to Ms Donnelly who prepared and delivered a very informative study skills presentation to our 3rd years on Thursday last. This will be invaluable to our 3rd year group as they prepare for their Junior Certificate.
TY HUMAN RIGHTS TALK– Thanks to Mrs O Toole for organising this very informative talk. Representatives from the Human Rights Group AFRI led by Joe Murray talked to TY students on Wednesday last. AFRI campaigns for peace , justice , environmental sustainability and equality. It seeks to influence policy and practice in promoting human Rights and it responds particularly to the effects of militarisation , environmental destruction and resource depletion. It’s patron is Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Our students gained new and valuable insights into the area of Human Rights.
TY TRIP TO BIRR FILM FESTIVAL– Thanks to the French Department for organising last Thursday’s trip for our TY Group to see a film as part of the Birr Film Festival. The students gained new insights into French language and culture.
LADIES GAA – Senior Girls Gaelic – Well done to the girls on their 2-18 to 4-4 win over Heywood in the first round of the championship. Gallen came from 8 points down to triumph!The scorers were – Maria Egan 2-1, Kate Kenny 0-5, Shauna Heffernan 0-4, Ellee mc Evoy 0-4, Andrea Arnold , Rachel Seery , Aoife Corbett and Roisin Egan 0-1 each.Well done to Mrs Derval Scully and the girls.
Our Junior Girls backboned by the Naomh Ciaran u16 and u14 winning teams had a big win over Mountmellick CS in the first round of the Junior Championship.
NORTH LEINSTER JUVENILE CHAMPIONSHIP– Well done to Mr mc Hugh and his team for getting their campaign off to a good start with a 4-20 to 5-6 win over defending North Leinster and Leinster winners Ballymahon SS. The teams were level at half time 4-2 to 1-11 yet Gallen responded with 3-9 in the second half to win comfortably. The full forward line of Dean Buckley , Darragh Kieran Flynn and Marcus Keena were in good scoring form accounting for 4-10 of the total.
Team and Scorers were – Mark Griffin , David Wren , Adam Reams , Colin Egan , Mark Cahill, Aaron Brazil, Ben Egan , Calvin Fox Keena[0-1] , Ronan mc Donagh [0-4], Oisin mc Guire, Darragh Michael Flynn[0-2] Jack Poland 0-2, Dean Buckley 1-3, Darragh Kieran Flynn 2-5, Marcus Keena 1-3.
Keelan Egan , Adam Henry , Adam Johnson, Conor Poland, Deema Feehan , Adam Greene, Corey Buckley [0-1], Michael Delaney , Shane Delaney and Josh Buckley also played their part in this fine win.
JUNIOR RUGBY – Congrats to Mr mc Grath and the Junior Rugby team who beat Athlone CC 32-10 to secure their second win in the Connacht Junior League. They play Garbally and Mountbellew in their next two matches.
