Gallen Community School News Updates – February 24th 2012

Scór:
Gallen CS held a special assembly on Monday last to mark the fantastic achievement of our Ballad Group winning the All Ireland Title in Castlebar on the weekend before last. Avril Spain, Niamh Delaney, Zoe Rooney, Valene Greer and Reveina Devery and their mentors Mr Ciaran Reynolds and Ms Deborah Reynolds were given a well-deserved and enthusiastic welcome. Their beautiful renditions of “Through the Eyes of an Irishman” and” The Mad Lady and Me” brought them well deserved glory.

Agricultural Science:
Students in the fifth and sixth year agricultural science classes accompanied by Ms Brennan and Ms Buckley, travelled to the Bellair Farm last Wednesday where master farmer Mr Ciaran McDonald demonstrated a modern 32 rotary milking unit. There was lots for the students to see and to ask questions on. The trip proved most informative and will be invaluable for the students as they face into their examinations. Gallen C.S. wishes to thank Mr McDonald for giving of his time and expertise to our students.

Recycling:
As part of their CSPE project on Stewardship , the second year class St Diarmids visited Derryclure recycling Plant outside Tullamore to see all the household items that could be recycled. This week Michaela, Dylan, Therese and Niall gave out a leaflet (that Niall had prepared) to all classes about what they learned and to raise awareness about the huge range of items that can actually be recycled and hopefully bring this message home also.

Basketball:
Congratulations to our first and second year girl’s basketball teams under the tutelage of Ms McKeogh who have been making great strides recently. Our new gym has been a great addition to the sporting facilities within our school and provides the teams with actual
Court practice. The girl’s basketball teams can be proud of their efforts thus far. Our first year team have won four out of five matches and our second years remain unbeaten in all four outings.
