Basketball

Gallen CS had a convincing win over Mullingar CS in the Midlands League at a home game last Wednesday. The girls scored the following baskets to win: Ciara Flynn (4) Aoife Corbett (6) Ellee Mc Evoy (10) Emer Nally (6) Sarah Kenny (2) Eimer Flynn (2) Kaitlin Rigney, Rachel Seery , Laura Devery, Anna Grehan, Avril Spain, Roisin Egan and Emma Maher.

Gallen CS will play Moate CS Next Wednesday at 10.00am in Ferbane

 Career Talk                                                                                                                                              Celine O Donovan Schools Liaison Officer from NUIG spoke to a large group of sixth year students last Wednesday. Celine outlined the different faculties in NUIG and gave an overview of some of the courses that are available to students to apply to via the CAO form.  NUIG also hold an information meeting for Parents/students in an Athlone Hotel in November and they will ask the school to give letters to students regarding this meeting nearer the event.

Positive Mental Health Talks

Last Wednesday was World Mental Health Day which also marked the start of the schools Positive Mental Health Week for seniors. The theme for senior students this year is Alcohol and Mental Health. On Thursday we invited two members from Alcoholics Anonymous Ireland to meet our sixth years and share their experiences with them and next week we have a similar workshop for our fifth year students. SPHE and religion classes also cover classes in mental health issues with the students. Our focus with the Junior Students will coincide with Offaly Mental Health week in November   and our theme is Bullying and Mental Health.

Transition Years Trip to Limerick

On Friday the Transition year class accompanied by  Mrs Finnegan,  Mr Dunican and Cathy McDermott visited the University of Limerick Open  Day.  Mrs Finnegan brought the students on a tour of the campus  showing the students  the Main building, the Foundation Building, the Library, the student village and the sports complex.  Students were then free to attend one of the talks they had preselected   and to have a look around . Such was the interest  in the University that many TY’s asked  Mrs Finnegan if they could attend another Open Day  . Then then  went to visit the  Hunt Museum where they were given a tour  and shown some antiquities from ancient civilisations that have been collected.  After a short stop at Crescent Shopping centre they arrived back by 5.30.

NUI Maynooth Information Session in Athlone

Mrs Finnegan , Guidance Counsellor received information from NUI Maynooth that on Monday 22nd October in the Radisson Hotel Athlone 7-9p.m , representatives from the University will be there to meet with students/parents regarding the entire range of courses  that NUIM offers.Information is also available to mature students  and the DARE and HEAR scheme. Kay Mitchel from NUIM will speak with out sixth years next week in school.
