GALLENT  GALLEN GIRLS IN ALL  IRELAND SCHOOLS  JUNIOR  LADIES TITLE

GALLEN  CS 3-5  SCOIL  MHUIRE  CARRICK ON SUIR  TIPPERARY 6-16

Gallen   CS  displayed  great  reserves of talent ,  courage  and   tenacity  but it was  not  enough to  wrest the    crown from a well-balanced and well drilled Scoil  Mhuire  Carrick on  Suir  team in this  All Ireland  Final   played in a well-appointed venue  in   Crettyard   Co  Laois last  Saturday. Scoil  Mhuire were  too  strong in  certain  key  positions   particularly  down the  centre .  From  Geraldine  Power at  centre  back to  Emma  Murray[1-1]  and  Kelly  Ann  Doyle  [2 2] at midfield., Katie  Murray  and  the  excellent  Aoife  Murray[  scorer of      3-11]  and  a  deserving player of the  match at  full  forward,  Scoil  Mhuire  just  had too  many  match winners in key areas and try as they  might  Gallen  just   couldn’t  match them in  all sectors. At the outset it must be said that these Gallen CS   girls gave their all.  They are great ambassadors for their    school.  They  brought the    first ever   Ladies  Leinster  title to the  school this year and to  be  runners up in an All-Ireland  final to a team  of the  calibre of  Scoil  Mhuire [  who would  surely  hold their own at a  higher grade] is  nothing to  be ashamed of. The players and  management team  of  KP  Egan  ,  Elaine  Hough ,  Derval Scully and  Tom  Fitzmaurice have  a wonderful team  spirit ,   an excellent hard working ethos  and  players and  management  alike  should  stick together   and   make   a   Leinster Senior   title  and  whatever lies  beyond that   a  real  target over the  next   few years.

Aoife   Murray, setting the tone for what was to   come gave the Scoil Mhuire girls the lead with a point on    3 minutes.  Roisin  Egan  equalised with an excellent long range point before  Aoife  Murray pointed again. Gallen got  a  great  boost when  Ellie Mc  Evoy goaled with a low  left foot   shot  giving   Gallen a 1-1 to 0-2 lead after 9  minutes.Keely  Corbett Barry  pointed for  Scoil  Mhuire before  Aoife  Murray  stamped her  authority on proceedings  , scoring 1-2  between the  10th and 16th   minutes.  Ellie  mc  Evoy replied with a point ,  Gallen  1-2   Scoil  Mhuire 1-5  after 16  minutes. Scoil  Mhuire  hit  another purple  patch  scoring  1-3   between the 17th and 23rd  minutes.  Kelly  Anne  Doyle   got the   goal  and Aoife  Murray got 3 points.  Gallen trailed 2-8 to  1-2  after 24  minutes.Gallen  showing great heart and  courage  dominated  the  rest of the  half   outscoring  Scoil  Mhuire  by  2-2  to 0-1.  Aoife  Corbett  pointed two  frees and two  goals  by  Ellie  mc  Evoy,  the  first in the  28th  minute  when she  picked up  the  rebound  and shot low to the  net after the  keeper  dropped the ball and   the  second  right on half  time when she   got on the  end  of  a  long range free from  Roisin  Egan to  punch the  ball to  the  net. This was a great   boost to  Gallen  CS   and  they had reduced a 9  point  deficit to  two  by  half time  , the  score  being  Gallen  CS 3-4  Scoil  Mhuire 2-9.Ellie  mc  Evoy  having  scored 3-1 and Aoife  Murray 1-6  in the  dual of the  full  forwards.

2ND  HALF –  When  Roisin   Egan   pointed   4  minutes into the  second half to  leave  one  point in it  ,  Gallen  CS   3-5  Scoil  Mhuire  2-9, it seemed we were  set for  a  gripping  battle.   Sadly   this proved to  be  Gallen’s  last  score and try as they  might they  couldn’t  stop the  Scoil Mhuire  machine   clicking into  gear.  Aoife  Murray   goaled in the  8th  minute with a shot into the top  corner and  they  added 1-7   without  reply  between  the 9th  and  24th  minute  to  lead    4-16 to  3-5  with  Aoife  Murray  scoring 1-5  of  this  from play and frees. Murray  had  now  scored 3-11   [3-7  from  play]  in   a  display  that  everyone present  no  matter  what    team   they were   supporting , was  privileged to  witness. Gallen  kept bravely   trying  but  Scoil Mhuire  capped their  display   with  a  goal  each  from  Kelly  Ann  Doyle  in the  27th  minute and  Emma   Murray in injury  time leaving the  final  score  Scoil  Mhuire  Carrick on  Suir  6-16  Gallen   CS 3-5. Gallen  CS   can  be  rightly  proud  as  can   the  Naomh  Ciaran   club.   Naomh  Ciaran  were  All  Ireland  Champions  at     Feile  2011 [  Division 2]  and  Feile  2012[  Division 1] and  County  Champions   at  u14  in 2011 and 2012,   u16  in 2012 and 2013  and  Minor in 2013  as well as a  Leinster  Junior  Schools title  for  Gallen  CS , show that the   future is   bright for  these   talented   young  sportswomen.
