First year students at Gallen CS gathered together to celebrate European day of Languages on Wednesday afternoon. European Day of Languages was launched in 2001 and is an initiative which aims to celebrate the richness of our continent and its cultural heritage through the promotion of plurilingualism within Europe.
At Gallen CS, European Day of Languages comprised an afternoon full of fun activities for first year students. The school is currently hosting one Italian student and several Spanish students in 5th year and these students kindly offered to teach our eager and ambitious first years some Italian and Spanish phrases which might prove useful when they are on a school trip or on their holidays! Next, they enjoyed the opportunity to learn some German and put this to good use by playing a highly competitive game of Bingo!
Students put their physical and linguistic prowess to the test by engaging in a game of Twister through French while the fast-paced game of Splat tested student’s knowledge of Irish vocabulary. The day ended on a high note with a Tráth na gCeist with questions based on the geography, history and culture of many European countries. Well done to team Germany who got 20 questions correct. Cathal Daly and Conor Grennan in first year ,were the winners of the competition filling in all the counties of Ireland correctly
Many thanks to the languages department, the teachers who helped supervise, the Italian and Spanish students and the Transition Year students for their help and involvement in making it an enjoyable day for our first years.
Congratulations to the senior girls who were part of the Ferbane Senior Ladies football team who won in Kilcormac last Saturday beating Edenderry by 8 points. Well done to all the girls and their coaches and mentors.
The TYs had an enjoyable two days in Belmullet Outdooor Education Centre last week with Mr Dunican and Mrs Scully where they got to enjoy some water sports and hill walking among other events also.
